Difference Day
As part of ‘Difference Day’ 3 of my friends and I travelled to St Brigid’s School in Tallaght. There was other members of the team such as Dave, Morris and Denis O’Reilly who organised the days for us.
At the beginning of the day we started by helping out in the new garden centre that was being built for them, it was fun work as digging and planting is a really nice activity to do. Later at 10a.m over 200 volunteers came from a company called Avolan, this is when the work rate increased dramatically as we only had one day to complete it.
My friends and I were then in charge of the skip for the rest of the day. We had to build a ramp up into the skip as there was wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of rock and rubbish that needed to be dumped. This was very tiring and strenuous work. It was our job to constantly assure there was enough space for rubbish to go which was very hard with the amount of it coming. We had to use sledgehammers to break the larger debris so it would fit better into the skip, using the sledgehammers was quite fun!
During the whole day many things were built for the children such as a football pitch, an adventure trail, and indoor and outdoor sensory room, loads of artwork and much much more. Looking at pictures of the school before and after the day is amazing and very fulfilling as it shows what a difference we made, also seeing all the young children come out and enjoying everything we made was fantastic.
As part of a different ‘Difference Day’ we travelled to Ballymun to help do work in a small garden centre, this time it was only the Difference Day crew. This was very hard work as we had to lift lots of wood and dig many holes, it left me with blisters all over my hands and a sore back. We began building a small canopy in the middle of the garden which looked amazing when constructed. We then made seats from tree trunks around a fire place for children. I really enjoyed the two ‘Difference’ days as I feel I gained so much from them.
